As we reflect on our Canadian Forces, Army, Air Force, Arctic operations, and others, we've installed a poppy on the post composer.
This year, I'm thinking about the four lives lost at Wainwright, and the dozens still fighting for their lives in burn units in Edmonton and Calgary.
From my time at AHS, I know they are receiving the best care and love.
For the four lost, we remember you.
Personally, I remember my grandfather, who was an RCMP sergeant. Though he didn't serve with the Forces, he served at home. For that, I'm proud to carry his name as my middle name.
Mastodon Canada will carry the poppy until November 12th.

Thanks so much for saying this, Avi! I can't believe how many people have their heads so far up in Oil & Gas that they believe the only way to stop the largest multi-billion dollar industry which is creating costly global wars, killing countless millions to raise their profits and capital ownership, is to hand them more of our public money without any strings attached. We could be funding anything but Oil & Gas to make our lives more affordable, but most importantly we should be funding ourselves away from Oil & Gas dependency!
I'll also add my response to one of the commenters on FB who claimed that we already tax US oil corporations to extract our resources:
While this is technically true, in that this is the purpose of charging royalties; 95% of Canadian oil is in Alberta and owned by Albertans. The Alberta government is supposed to be a responsible steward of this resource owned by us (the people, not the government!), to fairly tax those who profit off of it. However, our Alberta government is fully in the pocket of the profiteers, and is representing their interests to extract our resources for their profit with little to no cost to them. That equates to little to no public revenue for us, the owners of the oil; with full profit margins for the exploiters of our public resources. That is not responsible stewardship. The UCP even makes the public pay for abandoned oil well cleanup, instead of the oil corporations which profited off of them! It's no different than a corporation using all our public infradtructure then getting a break off all the property taxes, except with oil it's a much bigger money grab than any of us plebs can imagine.

People are getting gouged at the pumps, but another costly handout of public money to oil and gas companies is no solution. Even after the Carney government’s $2.4 billion giveaway, gas prices continue to soar. In July, they were up more than 25% compared to last year.
Instead of more corporate welfare, it’s time for a windfall tax on the big oil giants that are set to make $100 billion in profits this year because of Trump’s illegal war in Iran. Doing so will generate billions in new revenue that we can use to give Canadians real relief at gas stations and grocery checkouts.

As we've learned more, it sounds like a grass fire spread in the blink of an eye because of sudden, powerful winds.
My heart is with the CAF members in both Edmonton and Calgary's Burn Units, the dozens still getting care, and their families across our country.
If these last 24 hours were to prove anything, we are stronger together. Thanks to support from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, we attended to the mass casualty event at CAF Wainwright as quickly as possible.
What troubles me is that, as Edmonton and Calgary hospitals went to Code Orange, they displaced others who also needed care. This is why hospitals aren't supposed to run at 100%, but Dani and Adriana can't seem to figure that out.
I'm thankful for all the HCWs in both cities who received these patients, and particularly at Peter Lougheed, where they've had two mass casualties in a week.
We don't give these folks enough gratitude, and neither does the UCP.

My heart goes out to everyone involved in the explosion at CFB Wainwright tonight.
Hearing as many as 7 dead, 150 injured. STARS has sent 4 helicopters and AHS has sent three King Airs. I saw a Saskatchewan King Air pariticipating too on ADS-B.
I’ve heard conflicting stories, and this one hits pretty close to home in a lot of ways. Keeping everyone in my heart tonight.

WestJet flight attendants are on strike to end unpaid work - and they will not have to stand alone. ✊
These workers can perform up to 35 hours of unpaid work each month. Boarding, delays, safety and security duties all happen before the plane pushes back from the gate — but too much of that work still goes unpaid.
They are standing up for fair pay and respect at work. Now it is our turn to show up for them.
A strong picket line matters. Every person who joins helps lift workers' spirits, shows the employer that these flight attendants have broad support, and reminds them that they are not alone in this fight.
Join the picket line.
CUPE 8125 members will be picketing in Calgary and Edmonton. If you are able, please come out, bring your signs, wear union colours if you can, and show WestJet flight attendants that Alberta's labour movement has their backs.
Edmonton picket info:
YEG Park and Wait Lot
Times: 06:00-10:00, 9:30-13:30, 13:00-17:00
Calgary picket info:
Location: Outside Delta Hotel Secondary Entrance, Departures Level
Times: 5:30-9:30, 9:30-13:30, 13:30-17:30, 17:30-21:30
Can't attend in person? You can still help. Share the message, talk to your family, friends and co-workers, and send a letter at https://endunpaidwork.ca
Every person who shows up helps send a clear message: WestJet flight attendants deserve to be paid for all the work they do, and Alberta workers are standing with them until they win a fair deal.
✊ Together, we will stand with WestJet flight attendants and help end unpaid work.
In solidarity!

Alberta doesn’t have an immigration crisis - but it surely faces an economic crisis, if the government succeeds in chasing immigrants and investors away with its racist referendum questions. In the Senate last night, I rose to denounce the scapegoating of migrants, to tell some hard truths, and to laud the economic and social value of newcomers to Alberta, especially for rural renewal. I hope you will share and boost my remarks so that more people can hear them before they vote. https://youtu.be/to7o-4rwHKQ?si=wPe22Rknr7kgu5n4 #cdnpoli #ableg #abpoli #Alberta #Canada #SenateofCanada #immigration
Watch: Senator Paula Simons denounces Alberta's anti-immigrant referendum questions
Hoping for the ABNDP to come to the realization that taking Danielle Smith's side on this issue is not the smartest move. The idea that "we must back O&G profiteers because we live in Alberta" is not the kind of governance expected from the under-represented in Alberta.
This isn't about Ottawa vs. Alberta. This is about our tax dollars being sunk into private profits at the grave expense of our national resources and environment.
Danielle Smith knows that the ABNDP is pro-oil. She didn't post this because she actually believes in what the sensationalized Rebel News-inspired meme says. She posted this because she wants to divide us, knowing that the ABNDP has already taken shots at the Federal NDP, and Avi Lewis specifically, for refusing to support excessive oil extraction and for supporting green alternatives. She posted this because she wants the ABNDP to join her divisive politics against Federal bodies in solidiarty with Alberta Oil.
So far, it looks like the ABNDP has taken the bait, by this comment on their repost of Danielle Smith to "prove" that they are on the side of O&G. Let's be clear, they don't need to do that. We already know (whether we agree with it or not), that they are pro-oil. We don't need them unironically repost Danielle Smith to know.
Note that neither Avi Lewis nor Ottawa are against Alberta industry. This is what Avi really said: "The oil industry is unwilling to pay for this pipeline because even they know the world is moving away from fossil fuels. This project leaves Canadians bearing all the risks of a bad investment without any of the rewards.
Projects that truly serve the national interest would lower costs, create good jobs, protect our environment and prepare us for the green economy of the future."

I don't know who needs to hear this but the University of Alberta is killing the music program at Augustana in Camrose.
They planned to announce this in May, but the Casavant organ bullshit in Convocation Hall put too much heat on the university, so they just quietly stopped accepting admissions instead.
This is a huge blow to music education in Alberta, and no other university offers a similar program.

With less than 30 days to go before the Alberta referendum, and after the deadline to request a special ballot had passed...Mom's seniors residence has figured out that their mobile polling station is probably going to be a nightmare on Oct. 19.
So, they delivered a single sheet of paper with the list of questions to each resident encouraging them to read them ahead of time and decide how they're going to vote.
If you've read the questions, you know that they are deliberately confusing and misleading. The government's ad campaign is also misleading. And we're paying for it all with our tax dollars while health care for seniors and everyone else is being privatized because of 50+ years of conservative party mismanagement.
My guess is a lot of the seniors in my mom's residence are barely aware of the vote, let alone understand the questions. They will look to others to tell them how to vote, because the information is mostly only available online, and they simply don't have access to it.

My mom lives in a seniors' home. Now that she's received her special ballot package, she has been telling other seniors about how many questions there are, etc.
They didn't believe her so she brought out her 10 ballots to show them.
The reaction ranged from astonishment, to anger to bewilderment. They had previously questioned her as to why she even needed a special ballot since they usually have polling station right at her residence building.
Try to picture 100 seniors with various mobility issues lining up to fill out 10 ballots that most were unaware of until they showed up on Oct. 19. The only question most had heard about was the one about separation.
You can't have direct democracy when people don't even understand the questions, and no one has taken the time to explain them. See my earlier post about the readability of the questions which tests show are written for a post-grad level audience.
