supplanted archlinux kde plasma with kdelinux as my daily penguin
last night
supplanted https://dev.phanpy.social/#/ with https://phanpy.social/#/ as my daily fedi supplanted firefox nightly with firefox as my daily browser
seems that as i plunge ever deeper into my decrepitude i lose more & more of the erstwhile delights of bleeding edge 🤔🤷♀️🥺

No, #ArchLinux is not associating with DHH or any of his projects. I'd sooner resign.
My journey going fulltime #linux continues. I noted wanting to move from my first choice (#pikaos) and give #steamos a try on my main desktop (this move also involved ditching the small win11 partition I held onto since buying the hardware). This did take place since that post... and I spent some time playing around with it... but I quickly ran into some choices made for Steam OS that didn't sit right with me as a desktop environment. So I went exploring further. Wanting to stick to #archlinux (as something to explore as I've dabbled mostly with Debian based distros), I decided to give #CachyOS a go. Thus far its snappy and seems to be smart with its makeup. Let's see how this one goes!
I think it would be funny if the Arch Linux folks named a version "btw", to fulfill the prophecy.

@gnuplusmatt@fosstodon.org i dual boot archlinux & kdelinux, with me spending most of my time in the latter for recent months. i've also run kinoite on my ssd before kdelinux, where it was straightforward to install s/w. kalpa also lets us. however the one unsolved challenge i have in kdelinux [my apps are via a combo of flatpak & distrobox] is i've found no way yet i can install my vpn app & have it work... unlike kalpa & kinoite, kdelinux has no package manager. having it in a distrobox did not work, albeit maybe i need to create a root not merely user db? there is no flatpak version, nor appimage, & the other precompiled binaries [rpms & debs, & Arch's one] are no use given no pkg manager.

Currently investigating a bug blocking the build of the Arch Linux code package for several releases now. The problem comes from a mismatch between open-vsx.org and an extension who updated a release artifact on GitHub after open-vsx.org picked it and made it available on their website.
Developers from around the world, please, PLEASE use immutable releases on GitHub or anywhere else! The whole software ecosystem thanks you.

Neue Malware-Welle: Arch Linux blockiert AUR-Updates
Erneut verbreitet sich Malware über Arch User Repositorys. Daher gibt es vorerst überhaupt keine Updates für AUR.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social The open-source dilemma in plain sight: critical global infrastructure relying on unrewarded volunteer trust. When attackers exploit that openness with supply chain malware, the emergency freeze shows how fragile free software ecosystems are under relentless corporate/state-level pressure.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Never used #Archlinux, but it has one of *THE BEST* knowledge bases out there, which I thank everyone who contributed to it:
whilst i came up with an entirely different outcome [i would never ever choose the windoze of penguins, ugh, & i am not a gamer, so care nada about any of that associated crap], some of his thinking matches mine
https://www.howtogeek.com/after-5-years-of-using-arch-linux-i-quit/
though i still have
installed on my main pooter's sda, & whilst it is still very reliable for me, the friction from the routine maintenance [he listed some of the items / actions, but there's others too] has been a bit of a drag for me for some years now, plus the ongoing #AUR attacks necessitate a perpetually heightened defensive posture that's tiring, & to which i chose eventually to respond to by replacing most of my AUR pkgs with #flatpak or #distrobox ones, or in several cases nothing at all [ie, i chose to just abandon some apps altogether].
so for a couple of months now [after more than a year in various VMs], my delightful daily penguin is the immutable atomic alpha
, on sdc. it is really pleasant to use, albeit ofc i needed to adjust several of my workflows to accommodate its RO base.
my sdb remains largely empty atm, but once it reaches Beta i hope to install
kalpa here
unfortunately my old 2011 Dell xps-15 lappy is "stuck" with Arch, coz it only has bios not uefi boot, which eliminates both of those atomics, alas

Looks like the AUR of Arch Linux has drawn another round of fire.
This time it appears to be a malware integrated into the build() step that comes with the PKGBUILD repo. Possibly Tor using.
If the build() step calls some binary like validator, assembler, optimizer, ... that comes with the AUR repo with sudo and suddenly and unexplained appears in the PKGBUILD be very suspicious.
See https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/aur-general@lists.archlinux.org/thread/BU6RECTA5DTJBL7Q4NQI5T3AKIN2FWSF/ (confirmation of scale) and https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/aur-general@lists.archlinux.org/thread/PR77K3SB6RFSTYP3KYOJOOX56SMXGBWO/ (first report)
And other related mails of that timespan.
Probably a good idea to be extra careful around AUR again.
If anyone has taken the malware apart I'd be interested in hearing details...
