As we creep up on the end of the year, I'm creating an #introduction post because .. apparently I didn't have one :)
I'm Dawgeth aka Matt. I'm a husband, dad, software architect, engineering manager, tinkerer, gamer, and generally curious person who has a hard time leaving well enough alone.
A few things you'll find me talking about:
#Technology - Software architecture, engineering, automation, and figuring out how things work.
#Linux - Self-hosting, homelabs, open source, and running services just because I can.
#Gaming - Steam, GOG, Xbox, and more .. I bounce around a lot!
#Programming - Building little projects, experimenting with new ideas, and occasionally turning a five-minute problem into a weekend project.
#Politics - Hanging out on the left, progressive, interested in local government, civic engagement, and making things a little better for everyone.
#Community - Building spaces where people feel welcome, whether that's online, in the neighborhood, or around a table.
#Makers - Small business adventures, creative projects, crafting, and supporting people who make things with their hands.
#Gardening - Growing food, learning as I go, and maintaining the illusion that I know what I'm doing in the garden.
#Family - A big family, a busy household, and plenty of reasons to appreciate the little things.
I'm a firm believer that curiosity is a pretty good way to spend a life. I have too many interests, too many projects, and probably too many browser tabs open.
Happy to meet new people, exchange ideas, talk shop, or just enjoy the occasional bit of internet nonsense.
Here's to another year of figuring things out!

My "notions bag", which is actually a £2 transparent plastic pencil case, is finally starting to break under the strain of the sheer amount of craft bits and bobs it's been holding for years.
Happily at this same time, my mam is asking me to fill out my Christmas wishlist with stuff I might need.
So, does anyone I know on here have, or know someone who has, a lil shop selling pretty and practical bags of this kind that are available to the UK? Thanks!

Has anyone out there made their own heated clothing? Either using purchased nichrome wire or harvesting it out of hair dryers? I found an Instructable but it would be nice to talk to someone who'd actually done it. I do community electronics recycling and have access to a lot of old hair dryers and laptop batteries. It would be cool to be able to turn them into heated winter gear.

Just read a toot regarding the web back in the 1990's, when it was static and you could happily write markdown in a text editor. I still have my books on DHTML, HTML 5, CSS 3 etc.
This has given me an idea (not that I need anymore of those right now), I'm looking to move out of finance into writing or creating physical items, which is going to be a slow and hard process, might not even work. But I like the idea of building myself a static website to complement this and maybe as a platform to sell. It would mean I would still be using my technical skills.
Did a quick search and am seeing things like Ecwid can be used as a plugin, but have no idea if this would be trying to do too much myself as I haven't even got close to e-commerce before. I don't want to go anywhere near Etsy, Shopify, Wix or the like.
Whatever I do I need to balance this with my mental health but this has provided a spark I have been missing for quite a few years so would like to dig further into this if I can. Just looking for a more sustainable way forward for the next how many years on our shared planet and that is better for my mind.

Looking for open source hardware licensed furniture that is:
meant for a workshop (work benches, cabinets)can be cut by hand from plans rather than being a CNC-focused designideally modular and/or parametric so I can adjust on some CAD tool for what I need in my space

A repair job landed at TOG last night: Buzz Lightyear had lost his voice. 🚀
Gary opened him up, tracked down the problem and installed a replacement speaker. Buzz is talking again and ready for his next mission:

Starting my journey to @emf@social.emfcamp.org ! This one will be a little different with an arm in a cast, but I’m looking forward to meeting hackers and makers in the field.
You’ll find me around the @irishembassy@chaos.social or the Hardware Hacking Area. ⛺️🔧

Replying to
#BirthTourism to the United States is a fucking lie. EVEN TO NEW YORK.
we had 8 years of a Republican governor that helped gut hospitals all across the state and 12 years of fucking Bloomberg in #nyc who didn't know a hospital or clinic he didn’t want to close down.
y’all have no idea of how huge is the hidden poverty of upstate #NY, thanks to neoliberal capitalists dismantling our #makers economy to turn us into #consumers ―and yet we ain't as bad as Texas.

While I’m working on my solar powered Meshtastic/MeshCore node, and it is going up on an ~1.5m antenna mast up on top of my house, does anyone have a solar + wireless weather station they like or DIYed, particularly if data goes into Home Assistant and/or MQTT?

I’m very slowly making an art deco inspired sideboard. There’s a lot still to be done, nothing you see here is glued in yet - but here’s a dry fit of the main parts.

Hallo Fediverse!
