Nicobar Islands Port and Palm Oil: Threatens Giant Turtles Palm Oil Detectives

On Great Nicobar Island in the most southerly part of India, big plans are in motion to transform the island into a shipping hub and destroy its native ecosystems including mangroves, reef systems and forests, putting the already endangered leatherback sea turtle (along with 1000's of other species) perilously close to extinction. Around one million trees are set to be felled to make way for palm oil and other monoculture crops on the islands, writes PhD Candidate Divya Narain for The Conversati

Painted Terrapin Batagur borneoensis Palm Oil Detectives

The painted terrapin, or painted river terrapin (Batagur borneoensis), is one of the most beautiful and critically endangered freshwater turtles in the world. Known for the vibrant markings displayed by males during breeding seasons, these terrapins are an integral part of Southeast Asia’s mangrove and river ecosystems. However, their populations are rapidly declining due to habitat destruction, including deforestation for palm oil plantations, sand mining, and coastal development. With fewer th

Went for a walk along the canal yesterday, now that the summer heat is waning, and saw a surprising number of creatures. This grumpy little soft shell turtle was doing it's best impression of a rock in the middle of the footpath along the top of the canal. I relocated them off the path, down next to the water. #turtle

Flex appeal: 'Trade-off' between armor and efficiency in sea turtle shells

A sea turtle's shell is a masterpiece. A study reveals that marine turtle shells combine flexibility and strength to protect against predators like sharks and stress while optimizing movement. This adaptation highlights the complex design of their shells and provides insights into this remarkable balance of strength and flexibility, which has allowed them to survive in the ocean for millions of years -- an example of evolution shaping species in an environment.
