Pay attention to the ableism being thrown around with respect to Christina Applegate finding out she doesn’t have MS. People acting like it’s a relief or a blessing. Like she’s “better off now”. She’s still sick. She’s just sick without answers. I guarantee it’s not a “relief” for her. Seeing so many people talk about how “lucky” she is shows two things: 1) People are inherently ableist and can’t accept that disabled people aren’t “less than” just because they’re sick. 2) Having a misdiagnosis doesn’t make you well. It means you’re starting over from scratch. In many ways having a firm diagnosis is better because it offers closure. It provides validation. It may open the door to treatment options. It helps people “believe” that you’re sick. When doctors say they “don’t know” what’s wrong… many folks will psychologize you. They will decide it’s all in your head and you were never really “that sick” to begin with. Listen to the patient, not the diagnosis. Christina has said she’s getting worse. It’s devastating to have to start over because your medical team got it wrong. She deserves better. We all do. #chronicillness #disability #ableism #christinaapplegate #ms

Newly disabled people are likely to resist using equipment that could ethically meet their access needs. Don't do it! Disabled people do not just suffer #ableism from the outside - many of us have internalized the oppressive system known as ableism and apply it to ourselves. This is especially true of people who were not born disabled, but became disabled later. The later you became disabled, the longer you likely lived fully enveloped in an ableist way of thinking with no internal evidence to gainsay it. It's not merely a matter of years, but also of one's upbringing, one's ability to change habits of thinking, but more years living as abled do tend to make internalized ableism once you've become disabled harder to eradicate from your thinking and behavior. If you're starting to be sensitive to screen time but also want to work in a field that uses screens, start training on how to use a screen reader. If you are ambulatory, but can't walk that far per day, use a scooter or wheelchair! #Disability

Two people in Michigan have died from the Cyclosporiasis outbreak. The media is already leading with the fact that they had pre-existing conditions. They’re pacifying the public. Anyone could die from Cyclosporiasis, but they want you to believe it can’t happen to you. It can only happen to the weak, the disabled, the elderly. The expendable people. Eugenics. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/03/well/eat/cyclospora-deaths-michigan.html #ableism #publichealth #disability #eugenics #chronicillness #uspol #Cyclospora

Too many people judge the disabled for what we do to survive. The truth is you can’t fathom what it’s like to live in a body that’s betrayed you. To exist in legislated poverty with no reliable help or care. To be left by the wayside to die and abandoned by almost everyone. People will claim to understand. They will try and empathize. But then they say things like “if it were really that bad you would have support”. Or “you just have to try harder and get another doctor”. They don’t actually listen to us. They talk over us. They’re utterly convinced that they know better about our suffering, and that if we really wanted to get better we could. We simply don’t want it bad enough. Nothing could be further from the truth. Disabled people are incredibly resourceful. We’re surviving in a system doing its utmost to kill us. If “wanting” to get better was all it took, no one would be chronically ill. If support showed up whenever it was truly needed, no one would suffer. If healthcare helped, we would be lined up at the hospital doors. Please don’t judge what you can’t understand Try and realize it’s your own fear and denial that makes you need to believe everything is “fixable”… because you can’t fathom getting sick and never getting better Disability comes for almost everyone… help us build a better world #disability #ableism #eugenics #chronicillness

It's frustrating to see people posting ableist comments when they criticize politicians. I just saw a comment saying Trump must need to wear a diaper. That is not the zinger that you think it is. Some disabled folks wear diapers or have colostomy bags. Why comment on someone else's body (weight is another common target) instead of their actions or policies? Please stop the ableist remarks. It shows how little you care about disabled folks. #Ableism #Disability #Politics

There’s a good reason why I choose to never attend blindness conventions, or assimilate myself with a lot of the blindness groups here in the US. I prefer hanging around a smaller contingency of blind people rather than the larger groups. Aside from the fact that the blind community is often extremely racist towards disabled people of color, trans phobic and homophobic to the disabled LGBT plus members, ableist to other disability groups, the community as a whole participates in techno ableism. The community chides others for choosing to not willingly participate in capitalism any longer. The community values independence rather than interdependence. I do not see eye to eye on many of the single disability issues the community at large advocates for, especially as it relates to employment and accessibility access at the risk of my and others privacy. The community is too focused on getting others to assimilate and comply with a hostile capitalistic system rather than encouraging others to live their best blind and or disabled lives even if they do not work. This is also why I prefer to hang around other disabled people and other disability groups outside of my blindness. They do not follow these same rigid desires. I haven’t even touched on the internal discrimination I have seen from blind people to other blind people. I have repeatedly witnessed workplace discrimination that was a lot worse than none disabled bosses. And that isn’t even the half of everything else. #Disability #Ableism #Blind #Blindness

Okie Fedi, I'm gonna be a bitch. My partner's neurodivergence makes it basically impossible for her to like, make alt text. She is also an artist and enjoys photography, but the Fedi's "no alt no like, no alt no boost" stuffs makes her feel excluded and less. And that's before the harassment and the smarmy reply guys "actually" her. Aside from the blatantly abelist stuffs, one super common response is that she should use Alt4Me to participate. Okie cool. A way to get help! But does it work? No. No it does not. I did a quick search of the Alt4Me hashtag. Of the 17 uses I saw in the last 5 days on mastodon.social: 11 posts got no help 3 posts got help 2 posts were telling ppl to use the hashtag 1 post was complaining abt ppl not using provided alts. Tbh? That is kind of fked. Fedi u aren't inclusive if u make systems to help ppl and u don't do the work to actually help. It makes it easier to say "lol we tried" IG, but it still leaves ppl without help... and IG gives preachy bullies another took to use to harass the ppl the tools are built for. "But we have a tag for that, use it!" They do. Do u? #Alt4Me #AltText #Fedi #NeuroDivergence #Ableism

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4. I would *love* to, but due to ableism in the cycling and transit world, even when something provides for cycles, it usually only provides for abled upright cycle riders. Hanging racks, rack with spacing that only fits upright bicycles, inability to roll it the whole way there, etc. This point was included in my talk at the 2022 CalBike Summit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fV-3d-J7pw&t=99s I'd love to take my trike on the trains in Europe, but even though it has some ability to fold, I cannot do it as fast nor lift it through a train door with steps unassisted, etc. So I'm stuck. If I can get across on the ferry, I could be screwed at the train station on the other side. #BikeNite #CycleParkingAudit #Ableism #Train #Ferry #Transport #Transportation #Accessibility

I need a very small portable washing machine that would be used only for socks. Can anyone suggest one? It has to be small enough that I can lift it and drain it myself. I can’t put my socks with my regular laundry & hand washing is no longer an option (dislocated wrist) I think this could be a huge spoon saver if I could find one that actually works. Help? #disability #chronicillness #ableism #washingmachine

People in the world today show a surprising lack of empathy. In fact, some right-wing Christian leaders like Allie Beth Stuckey and Joe Rigney are even teaching that empathy is sinful or toxic, and some people are using this as an excuse to treat anyone different from them like second-class citizens. https://medium.com/prismnpen/why-calling-trans-people-mentally-ill-is-a-pretext-for-cruelty-624b4bda5199?sk=db02762a6697a08073853ff066d5dce5 #LGBTQ #Transgender #MentalIllness #Ableism

Press Ganey (survey company) sent me a survey about my experience with the hospital during my surgery. I don't usually do surveys, because I'm not giving up my time for someone's market analysis. I was going to do it because the staff was awesome. It was truly the best hospital experience I'd ever had. But when I opened it, it has a LOT of questions and the print is so small it's going to give me a headache trying to get through it. So I wrote "cannot complete -- print is too small" on it and am going to send it back courtesy of their free postage. I'll fight ableism as and when I can. This is a pretty easy way to do so, not that it will make any difference. It never does because people love to be ableist. #Ableism #Disability #Vision

Do I have any Dutch followers or people who keep up with Dutch news and healthcare? I’m reading about a 2 year old disabled child who was euthanized but most of the reporting is from American right wing organizations so I don’t want to share or take it at face value. It seems there’s a law that allows parents to request Assisted Death for very sick children ages 1-12 and I would like to confirm that is true and ask what the general consensus is around this? I’m obviously very concerned about the precedent and the slippery slope of euthanizing disabled children… #netherlands #dutch #assisteddying #euthanasia #disability #ableism #eugenics

S5E7 Teho-osasto tv-sarjassa jatkuu Bentonin pojan kuulovammaan liittyvä case. He naureskelivat kuuroille "fanaatikoille". Esille nousi kansanmurha-kortti. Saatoin vähän triggeröityä tästä. Yritän muistaa, että tässä halutaan näyttää inhorealistisesti miten kuulevien maailma toimii ja näkee asiat. #viittomakieli #kuuro #deaf #Netflix #ER #ableismi #ableism
