Sooooo my recent mishaps with server administration are making me speed up my plans of shifting towards community-owned and -maintained hosting. Ever since my conversation with @boris@cosocial.ca almost one year ago, I took his quote “self-hosting is selfish” as a mantra. It’s time to act accordingly. Together with @Holly@pan.rent and @youjungnoh@pan.rent, we are putting together a group of tech-savy people who want to, respectively: Learn more about system administrationGet their hands dirty while doing soMaintain our own shared serverHost their own things (be them websites, projects, or services) together with comrades instead of individual infrastructure. There are many super cool collectives that are doing this already, and we intend to draw inspiration from their work and their documentation, but we really want to do this together! Who wants to join? Please, do reach out! I already spun up a small-ish VPS that is now hosting all my static websites. If you’d like to get involved, reach out and I would be happy to give you SSH access 🌻 We would also be very grateful if more experienced sysAds want to help us out by hosting workshops or brief classes. We intend to meet for the first time in South Holland (but maybe virtually too) sometime during the first two weeks of March. Next steps: Find a name for this group/server/missionPlan a series of (free, open) intro lessons with guestsStart hosting some thingsMigrate things I am already hosting with YunoHost in our community serverMigrate to a physical device in a home of ours? EDIT: I forgot to add this, but it goes without saying that ours would be a queer and transfeminist server #communityHosting #Linux #sysAd #systemAdministration #selfHosting #YunoHost #Nginx #hosting #server #VPS

Hi everyone. This is a quick #introduction to skyhaven.social - this is my custom built next gen version of Mastadon. The UI has been rewritten inside and out to be very next gen, state of the art. Everything works just as it should and looks super intuitive. If you're thinking about a move and looking for a place to base yourself, either permanently or until you find something better, consider skyhaven.social #welcome #server #join #mastodon

SmartOS: The illumos Way of Thinking About Servers A practical look at SmartOS, illumos, zones, LX compatibility and the way this operating system approaches servers. Rogue Project's Friendica Online After about 8 hours or more of work I have finally gotten the Instance back online. Unfortunately there was some data loss. Though all user accounts are still available and everything appears to be up and running smoothly now. One huge hurdle I have had is that the developers of Friendica use Ubuntu by Canonical. I will not use anything from Canonical personally. I prefer the RHEL side of the spectrum. My workstations are Fedora which is RHEL upstream. My VPS for this Instance is Rocky Linux 9. The issue here is that Debian based distro's such as Ubuntu use AppArmor which is arguably less secure or at least less configurable than SELinux. So Friendica upstream has no concern for SELinux (to be fair they do warn that this is their position and only support Ubuntu so it is what it is) and how it effects a server using this heightened approach to security. It usually leaves me with headaches after every upgrade of Friendica. Not only because of their updates, but because of the updates Rocky Linux makes to SELinux Context causing me to have to mass re-label and configure files and directories. The changes are needed for security and not just designed to give me a headache . To any of my users that may have bumped into my Maintenance page the answer is no. No, I am not going to scrap Rogue Project's Friendica. Though it was tempting earlier today when I was looking at the hours of work I had to make sense of what was going on. The losses were minimal and I hope no one is to disappointed. At least this go around I did not lose the entire site and have to build over from scratch. I have made some changes that I hope to be worth the effort. I have gone away from using worker.php from the cron and now use daemon.php via systemd. This should help with the SELinux issues if nothing else because the context issue will not be so wide spread. Hopefully this also helps with the memory leak issues of the worker.php. It will show just how much of a change good or bad it will have in the future. As usual time will tell. I hope everyone has a great day! Take Care! In eigener Sache: Unsere vorübergehende Mastodon-Präsenz Unsere Mastodon-Instanz social.anoxinon.de steckt aktuell in Schwierigkeiten. Deshalb müssen wir unsere Masto-Präsenz auf eine andere Instanz verschieben. #Mastodon_Instanz #mastodon #Social_Media #Server #Backup #Linux

Videoconference community servers The open Jitsi Meet instances I was using for community videocalls all require a login, now. Are there any videoconferencing community servers that are still open, or where I could ask to have an account? The last thing I want to do is self-host a video conferencing software, unless it’s something simple and light. Also: has anyone been trying other software solutions beyond BigBlueButton and Jitsi Meet? Happy to test reliable alternatives you recommend. #help #videocall #videoconference #Jitsi #JitsiMeet #BBB #BigBlueButton #server

Crust-ui is designed for sysadmins who live in the CLI and want everything in one place: • Real-time CPU/RAM + disk I/O • Manage services & processes • Security insights (SSH fails, open ports) • Built-in terminal + file manager • Zero-install remote mode Goal: replace scattered tools like htop/systemctl with one TUI. It's now on Github. Would love feedback from the fediverse https://github.com/Sajid-RED/crust-ui #linux #cli #server #development #opensource #rust #rustlang #github

🚀 Ah, the noble quest to understand how #satellites take a fiery plunge back to Earth. Meanwhile, the only thing crashing here is the #server hosting the article 😅. Forbidden? Does anyone know of a powerful NAS, ideally one thats upgradable that I can install my own OS onto? Id love a HP MIcroserver Gen 10 v2 Plus, but it sounds like theyre pretty loud? I have a Thinkcentre M720q, which is awesome, but figuring out how to power JBOD reliably and safely, and how to get 4 SATA connections out of it is a bit beyond me. I need CPU oomph because I'll be doing more than just NAS stuff. #NAS #Server #sysadmin #homeLab #linux
